
Bringing the Departures Rebrand to Life Through Motion
When Giant Spoon enlisted my motion design services for reimagining luxury travel publisher Departures for the digital age, I welcomed the challenge.
Departures needed to evolve from seven print issues yearly to an always-on editorial platform reflecting contemporary notions of affluence.
Rather than an afterthought, motion became part of the rebrand process itself. We considered how candidate nameplates could move seamlessly across platforms - retaining brand essence while inviting audiences into transportive transitions.
I focused on elegantly revealing the nameplate in cinematic ways cueing the feeling of discovery and transformation.
Smooth animated forms revealed letterforms with artisanal flair.
The approved direction incorporated editorial with design - guiding reader curiosity.
The collective motion reflects Departures' values of globally connected perspectives.
With digital banner templates I then translated the approach into flexible social media branding assets using the vibrant Mercury font palette. These animated post formats help Departures reinforce their refined yet relaxed voice across channels.
Considering motion early and often proved instrumental in manifesting a visual identity flexible enough for Departures’ exciting expansion while honoring their past. It points toward new frontiers where editorial energy inspires visual innovation.
